Borneo - Sarawak, Malaysia

If someone was to have asked me before what can I tell them about Borneo, my response would have been summarized in two words: jungle and rainforest.

After this four-day trip though, I can tell you a lot more ☺

Borneo is a very big island to the east of the Malaysian peninsula, which belongs to Malaysia, little Brunei and Indonesia. It is reputed to be the oldest rainforest in the world (1.5 million years old) and the second largest by size, second to the Amazon.

In the north you will find the states of Sarawak and Saba, which are part of Malaysia, and the small country of Brunei. Indonesia’s Kalimantan region is to the south and encompasses the major part of the island.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

You will laugh when you come to the summit of the highest natural point in Singapore and see the sign that says 163 m above ground. And the reason you will be laughing is that although not very high, you will have had to exert quite a lot of effort to get to the top and you will be drenched in sweat.

A walk through Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and a hike to its peak will give you a glimpse of the jungle that once used to cover most of Singapore. Take a walk through one of the many existing trails and witness the flora and fauna that such a tropical destination has to offer.

And make sure you bring an additional T-shirt with you.  You will be thanking me when you change into something dry just prior to jumping into a freezing air-conditioned cab that will whisk you back to your hotel after a wonderful and sweaty walk through the jungle.

To get there, take a cab and ask them to take you to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, 177 Hindhede Drive.

Pattaya - Thailand

‘It’s a sex destination!’ is what a friend said when Robin told her that we’re going to Pattaya for a conference. And that is exactly what I would have said.

Changi Museum

For a first-timer to Singapore, this is a great way to find out more about Singapore's history during the dark years of World War II. It's not a big museum, but it will give you a mental picture of all the hardships that happened on this small little island more than 60 years ago. And it will make you appreciate even more what Singapore has managed to build since then.

I recommend you do the tour. It's 60 min, which makes for a perfect afternoon. More information?
